Achtung-Panzer by Major General Heinz Guderian

Amongst the military literature of the 20th Century, Achtung-Panzer! is a most rare commodity- the distilled thoughts and strategic theories of an outstanding soldier as they were just two years before he was charged with putting them into practical action.

In this first English translation carrying annotations of a modern commentator, the fascination of historians, military professionals and students of land warfare will be in how Guderian is seen to have learned from the lessons of the 1914-18 conflict and developed his conviction that the efficient use of armoured formations held the key to success in any future battle. Most apparent is his independence of mind for, although much of his policy came from the doctrines of the national education and military training establishment, his words show a cavalier readiness to consider alternatives where the accepted norm did not attract him.

The movement of the land army in fully motorized formations was not a dream to Heinz Guderian - he saw it as a necessity. He was convinced of this long before he wrote Achtung-Panzer! and the book represents how the theories of this doctrine would be practised on the battlefield. Hitler's personal enthusiasm for modern mechanized technology provided inspiration for Guderian, but the air and sea forces often seemed to get priority. His superior, General Lütz, urged Guderian to write this book as part of their campaign for more funds. Thus, readers will find examples of the author seeking advantage points over competitors for national support; they will not, however, find much national chauvinism and may well be surprised by the regular praise of the British and French in respect of tank development.

Although many of the points made by Guderian in this treatise were being echoed by his equivalent experts in other nations, it was the man from East Prussia who was first to mastermind their application. This fact alone marks this volume as essential reading for those studying the evolution of land warfare and the years of German armour supremacy in the first part of World War II.

Tanks in Camera by David Fletcher

Once war was declared in Europe it was only a matter of time before it spread to the Middle East. The conflict that swiftly followed saw the armies of Britain, Germany and Italy slogging it out on the inhospitable desert sands of Egypt and Libya. The final act took place in Tunisia, when British troops joined by their American allies, defeated the Axis forces in 1943. The pitched tank battles made news headlines across the world and names like Tobruk and El Alamein became widely known.

Drawing on the extensive photographic archives of the world famous Tank Museum, Tanks in Camera depicts almost three years of continuous tank warfare from the viewpoint of the British soldier, set against the harsh backdrop of the North African desert. Many of these photographs are unique and 'unofficial', taken by British Army tank crews and soldiers as personal records of their war service, and most have never been published before.

Eight chapters cover significant stages in the desert war, each with a general introduction leading up to a photographic section with extended captions. Tanks dominate, naturally, but other armoured vehicles are included as well; transport, landscapes and incidents in the tank soldiers life are also recorded.

Tanks in Camera will appeal to all with an interest in the Second World War in general and armoured warfare in particular, including historians and military modellers.

Armoured Fighting Vehicles by Philip Trewhitt

Armoured fighting Vehicles is a compendium of the most important and influential military vehicles that have been in service since World War I. Starting with the crude and unreliable tanks that fought on the Western Front in World War I, the book goes on to examine the military vehicles of World War II, tanks such as the Panzer IV, Panther, Tiger, Sherman and T34 - vehicles that transformed the art of land warfare. Armoured Fighting Vehicles also includes the most up-to-date fighting machines, such as the Abrams and Challenger tanks, and Bradley and Warrior infantry fighting vehicles.

Each vehicle is fully illustrated by a full-colour side-profile artwork, and accompanied by a detailed specifications table giving country of origin, crew, weight, dimensions, armour, armament, powerplant and performance, all measurements in imperial and metric. In addition there is accompanying text for each vehicle that summarises the vehicle's development and service history.

ARTIST
Nicolas Trudgian

Having graduated from art college, Nicolas Trudgian spent many years as a professional illustrator before turning to a career in fine art painting. His crisp style of realism, attention to detail, compositional skills and bright use of colours, immediately found favour with collectors and demand for his original work soared on both sides of the Atlantic. Today, more than a decade after becoming a fine art painter, Nicolas Trudgian is firmly established within a tiny, elite group of aviation artists whose works are genuinely collected world-wide. Over the past decade Nick has earned a special reputation for giving those who love his work much more than just aircraft in his paintings. He goes to enormous lengths with his backgrounds, filling them with interesting and accurate detail, all designed to help give the aircraft in his paintings a tremendous sense of location and purpose. His landscapes are quite breathtaking and his buildings demonstrate an uncanny knowledge of perspective but it is the hardware in his paintings which are most striking. Whether it is an aircraft, tank, petrol bowser, or tractor, Nick brings it to life with all the inordinate skill of a truly accomplished fine art painter. A prodigious researcher, Nick travels extensively in his constant quest for information and fresh ideas. He has visited India, China, South Africa, South America, the Caribbean and travels regularly to the United States and Canada. He likes nothing better than to be out and about with sketchbook at the ready and if there is an old steam train in the vicinity, well that's a bonus!

Back From Normandy by Nicolas Trudgian

Normandy Special - £50 off until July 12th!

Like the Messerschmitt 109, its great adversary throughout almost six years of aerial combat, the Spitfire was a fighter par excellence. Good as many other types may have been, these two aircraft became symbols of the two opposing air forces they represented. Their confrontation, which began in 1940 during the Battle of Britain, continued without interruption until the last days of World War Two. From an air force teetering on extinction in the dark days of 1940, by the summer of 1944 the pilots of RAF Fighter Command had fought their way back to become top dogs. And when the invasion of northern France came, they swept over the beaches in force, cutting deep into enemy occupied territory, hammering the enemy in the air and on the ground. Key to this air superiority was the supreme performance of the Spitfire, its ability to out-fly the Luftwaffes best, and the wily leadership of the pilots who had survived the early air battles of the war. Among the best was 26 year old Pete Brothers, by 1944 a highly successful and experienced fighter pilot commanding his own Wing. Having fought through the battles of France and Britain, now with a clutch of air victories to his credit, in 1944 he took command of first the Exeter Wing, and then the Culinhead Wing, ideally placed to support the coming invasion of Normandy. Nick Trudgians striking painting recreates a typical scene as Mk IX Spitfires of 126 Squadron, led by Wing Commander Pete Brothers flying his Mk V11 Spitfire wearing high altitude paint scheme, race back to base at RAF Culinhead after a low-level attack on enemy transport in Normandy. The Culinhead Spitfire Wing flew constant armed Rhubarb attacks in support of the invasion from D-Day - June 6 1944 - till the first improvised strips were established in France a few weeks following the invasion. This beautiful aviation print, contrasting the frenetic pace of war with a restful English coastal landscape, evokes the memory of a legendary fighter aircraft that, flown by gallant pilots, helped change the course of history. Prints are signed by Pete Brothers and two other pilots who flew Spitfires in combat during World War II.
