The Ebro 1938, Death Knell of the
Republic by Chris Henry
The last major Republican
offensive of the Spanish Civil War and the last battle for the
international Brigades, the Battle of the Ebro was an attempt to reduce
the pressure on Valencia, the capital of the Republic, by drawing Nationalist
forces elsewhere. It was a vitally important episode in the Spanish
conflict, and ultimately it proved to be the death knell of the Republic:
their armies lost vast amounts of men and materials and they were unable
to defend their territory effectively against the imminent Nationalist
onslaught.
