Great Military Blunders by Geoffrey Regan

In this ground-breaking account of military blunders, acclaimed expert Geoffrey Regan considers why they occur. Sometimes the responsibility lies with leaders who fail as a result of being promoted beyond their abilities and others fail as a result of ambition. Failure can also be the result of poor planning or underestimating the enemy. Technology is another cause and inevitably politics also play their part.

Geoffrey Regan's Great Military Blunders is a powerful account of many such mistakes - from the Crusades to Kosovo. It is fully illustrated and accompanied the Channel 4 series of the same name.

Military and Naval Silver - Treasures of the Mess and Wardroom by Roger Perkins

This book seeks to demonstrate that the silver owned by the armed forces is much more than beautifully crafted metalwork. This is silver with a human face. By virtue of the wording engraved upon it, each piece has a story to tell. Its provenance and history is there to be read or interpreted. The opening chapters describe the ways in which military and naval silver has been conceived and created since the late 18th century, the work of some of the famous silversmiths involved, and the distinctive styles of design which they have employed.

A Concise History of Warfare by Lord Montgomery

'Lord Montgomery's stimulating book must surely take its place as a classic commentary on the history of warfare... It is the fruit of a lifetime spent in the study and tactics of war and it bears the authority of one who will without doubt be numbered among the great commanders. Its greatest merit springs from the authors understanding of the human factor in war. That it is permeated with his particular and well-remembered idiosyncrasies, the freshness ans vigour of his approach to any subject, will only enhance its undoubted value as a deeply interesting, often inspiring and intensely instructive book.' Against All Odds! by Bryan Perrett

What fierce motivation drives a soldier to commit himself to a last stand against an enemy which outnumbers him, has greater firepower and boasts other tactical advantages? The answer is no one characteristic, for such men are not always brave... or foolhardy.

A warrior can fight well because of anger or fear, for the support of his colleagues, out of loyalty to his superiors or his regiment, the urge for revenge or personal glory, or for the most heartfelt of desires - personal survival! Such commitment can destroy intended military tactics, annul a well-laid battle plan and render ineffective the most rabid armed force, but the times it has done so are few.

Following the international success of Last Stand!, Bryan Perrett has selected a further 13 examples of such actions, from two centuries and the continents of Europe, Africa, Asia and North America. Offered as fiction these events might be decried as unbelievable ... but they happened. And they happened as described here, for the author applies his attention to the detail which validates the action, and makes the volume relevant to deeper military study, in the sure and certain knowledge that the natural drama of the people and the combat covered will guarantee a text which is exciting and entertaining. For military historians this further collection of 'last ditch' warfare will offer pertinent insights into battlefield strategy an soldiering; for the reader of adventure non-fiction these awesome skirmishes will prove fascinating.

British Artists and War, The Face of Battle in Paintings and Prints, 1700-1914 by Peter Harrington

British Artist and War is an important new reference work, examining how artists at home and in the field dealt with the subject of war during a period of more than 200 years, and how these images were perceived by the public in Britain.

British Artists and War examines in detail the artistic inspiration an response to wars throughout the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, including the Napoleonic wars and Waterloo, the Crimea, the Zulu War and the Edwardian period to the Opening of the Great War in 1914.

The author, Peter Harrington, discusses popular themes and imagery in military art and suggests reasons why certain wars failed to inspire representation on canvas. He follows the development of the genre, from early diagrammatic sketches to portraiture and history painting, and traces the debate on the respective merits of glorification of the subject and realism: the schools of 'truth in spirit' and of exactly accurate portrayal of events and scenes were deeply divided.

The works of the leading artists of the period are analysed, as well as the influence of Continental artist on British art. The public response to these prints was closely linked with their accessibility, and the author gives details of exhibitions, panoramas and appearances in the illustrated press, and also cites contemporary printed evaluations and criticism relating to these events. The major illustrated papers of the 19thcentury established their own artists at the battlefields thus providing graphic material of war for a large audience at home.

The second part of the British Artists and War is a unique, comprehensive catalogue of more than 800 surviving oil paintings, depicting soldiers in battle and on campaign, in public and private collections around the world, including exhibition and provenance details where known.

Peking 1900, The Boxer Rebellion by Peter Harrington

In 1900 a violent rebellion swept northern China - the Boxer Rebellion.  The Boxers were a secret society who sought to rid their country of the pernicious influence of the foreign powers who had gradually acquired a stranglehold on China.  With the connivance of the Imperial Court they laid siege to the legation quarter of Peking.  Trapped inside were an assortment of diplomats, civilians and a small number of troops.  They were all Sir Claude Macdonald, the British Minister in Peking, had to defend against thousands of hostile Boxers and Imperial troops.  It would now be a race against time. Could the rag-tag defenders hold out long enough for the gathering relief force to reach them?  This book describes the desperate series of events as the multinational force rushed to their rescue.

ARTIST
Nicolas Trudgian

Having graduated from art college, Nicolas Trudgian spent many years as a professional illustrator before turning to a career in fine art painting. His crisp style of realism, attention to detail, compositional skills and bright use of colours, immediately found favour with collectors and demand for his original work soared on both sides of the Atlantic. Today, more than a decade after becoming a fine art painter, Nicolas Trudgian is firmly established within a tiny, elite group of aviation artists whose works are genuinely collected world-wide. Over the past decade Nick has earned a special reputation for giving those who love his work much more than just aircraft in his paintings. He goes to enormous lengths with his backgrounds, filling them with interesting and accurate detail, all designed to help give the aircraft in his paintings a tremendous sense of location and purpose. His landscapes are quite breathtaking and his buildings demonstrate an uncanny knowledge of perspective but it is the hardware in his paintings which are most striking. Whether it is an aircraft, tank, petrol bowser, or tractor, Nick brings it to life with all the inordinate skill of a truly accomplished fine art painter. A prodigious researcher, Nick travels extensively in his constant quest for information and fresh ideas. He has visited India, China, South Africa, South America, the Caribbean and travels regularly to the United States and Canada. He likes nothing better than to be out and about with sketchbook at the ready and if there is an old steam train in the vicinity, well that's a bonus!

Back From Normandy by Nicolas Trudgian

Normandy Special - £50 off until July 12th!

Like the Messerschmitt 109, its great adversary throughout almost six years of aerial combat, the Spitfire was a fighter par excellence. Good as many other types may have been, these two aircraft became symbols of the two opposing air forces they represented. Their confrontation, which began in 1940 during the Battle of Britain, continued without interruption until the last days of World War Two. From an air force teetering on extinction in the dark days of 1940, by the summer of 1944 the pilots of RAF Fighter Command had fought their way back to become top dogs. And when the invasion of northern France came, they swept over the beaches in force, cutting deep into enemy occupied territory, hammering the enemy in the air and on the ground. Key to this air superiority was the supreme performance of the Spitfire, its ability to out-fly the Luftwaffes best, and the wily leadership of the pilots who had survived the early air battles of the war. Among the best was 26 year old Pete Brothers, by 1944 a highly successful and experienced fighter pilot commanding his own Wing. Having fought through the battles of France and Britain, now with a clutch of air victories to his credit, in 1944 he took command of first the Exeter Wing, and then the Culinhead Wing, ideally placed to support the coming invasion of Normandy. Nick Trudgians striking painting recreates a typical scene as Mk IX Spitfires of 126 Squadron, led by Wing Commander Pete Brothers flying his Mk V11 Spitfire wearing high altitude paint scheme, race back to base at RAF Culinhead after a low-level attack on enemy transport in Normandy. The Culinhead Spitfire Wing flew constant armed Rhubarb attacks in support of the invasion from D-Day - June 6 1944 - till the first improvised strips were established in France a few weeks following the invasion. This beautiful aviation print, contrasting the frenetic pace of war with a restful English coastal landscape, evokes the memory of a legendary fighter aircraft that, flown by gallant pilots, helped change the course of history. Prints are signed by Pete Brothers and two other pilots who flew Spitfires in combat during World War II.
