Sacrifice at Vicksburg, Letters From the Front by Susan T Puck

This is the story of three soldiers of the 23rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry from their September 1862 enlistment to the end of their military service. After only a week's training, their army life started by chasing Braxton Bragg's army through Kentucky. They then went down river to Memphis, and with Grant through the swamps of Mississippi to Vicksburg. Their participation in Grant's assaults and siege resulted in letters of unique value, showing Grant's success from an enlisted perspective.

Alan Hankinson, author of First Bull Run, here describes the frustrating series of operations by which Grant attempted to bypass the swamps and bayous that protected the city to the north; the Battles of Champion Hill and Big Black River; and the siege.
