History of the Marathon Campaign of 490 BC well documented in the historical book Marathon 490 BC by Nicholas Sekunda. This superb book on the first Persian invasion of Greece published by Osprey Books available from the military print company.

The story of the Marathon campaign is an epic of the Ancient World.  When the Ionian Greeks revolted against their Persian overlords in 499BC, the cities of Athens and Eritria came to their aid.  The Persian King Darius swore vengeance and in 490 BC a fleet of 600 ships packed with troops was sent to take revenge on the Athenians.  This book details how the Greeks met the Persians in battle at Marathon and drove them in rout back to their ships.  The moral effect of this victory was enormous - for the first time a Greek army had defeated the Persians and demonstrated the superiority of hoplite tactics.

High Cost by Robert Taylor. (C)

High Cost by Robert Taylor. (C) The crews of Bomber Command faced one of the most daunting tasks, calling for courage sustained night after night, in conditions of desperate danger and discomfort. They did not fail us and 55,573 paid the supreme sacrifice. In his new tribute to The Many, Robert Taylors evocative painting recreates a typical scene encountered by many Royal Air Force bomber squadrons on raids over enemy occupied territory: Having already survived 30 successful operational sorties, on 9 February 1945 Lancaster PG-G of 619 Squadron has been intercepted by Luftwaffe night-fighters during a raid over Stettin Bay.
