Revolutionary wars. The first naval battle of the war between Britain and
France took place 400 miles west of the Ushant off the Brittany coast.
Louis Villaret de Joyeuse with the fleet from Brest of 26 war ships was
escorting a convoy of grain ships across the Atlantic. A British fleet
under Admiral Lord Richard Howe, intercepted the French and after 4 days
of skirmishing, clashed in the major naval action on the 1st June 1794.
One French ship was sunk and six were captured, but the French grain ships
managed to escape back to the harbour in Brest. The British fleet were too
badly battered to pursue.
