Antietam 1862

Antietam was one of the critical battles  of the American Civil War. The fortunes of the South were riding high after the resounding victory at Second Manassas. While Bragg and Kirby Smith invaded Kentucky, Lee's invasion of Maryland was intended to maintain the Southern offensive momentum, to wrest Maryland from the Union and to win recognition of the European powers. But his bold plan was compromised - and at the Antietam River the Army of Northern Virginia was fighting for its very life.

American Civil War Artillery 1861-1865 (I) Field Artillery by Philip Katcher and Tony Bryan

Perhaps the most influential arm of either army in the prosecution of the American Civil War, the artillery of both sides grew to be highly professional organisations, centralising their artillery, organizing artillery battalions from individual batteries ad giving their commanders higher ranks than field artillerymen had previously held. In battle, the introduction of the 12 pounder Napoleon, followed closely by rifled cannon, provided a range and power previously unknown on American soil. This book details this vital cog in the war-machine of both sides.

This Hallowed Ground by Bruce Catton

This magnificent history of the American Civil War is told by its finest historian, Bruce Catton, who won the Pulitzer Prize for 'Stillness at Appomattox'. It is a chronicle of the entire war to preserve the Union - from the northern  point of view, but in terms of the men from both sides who lived and died in glory on the battlefields. He combines an irresistible sweep with the minutest detail, so that we see the shifting, overall pattern of each battle and also the odd corners of the battlefield.

ARTIST
Featured Artist - David Dipnall

David Dipnals evocative images of the restful idyllic scenes of southern England are well known, epitomising, as they have for years, all that is endearing about traditional English landscapes. His well known images of his beautiful and fertile homeland are a world away from Australia, where he now spends most of his time. In the last decade, David Dipnall estimates that he has travelled nearly 2 million miles, continuing to maintain a busy work schedule of exhibitions and regularly commuting between England and Australia. His originals are highly sought after, and over fifty of his images have been published as limited edition prints, many of which have sold out. Always a traveller, he believes in the philosophy that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and his beautifully detailed traditional English landscapes are definitely painted from the heart.
