Christopher Erik Collingwood, Historical and Military Artist,

Chris has produced a wealth of impressive paintings from the Napoleonic War. American Civil War, English Civil War, and a variety of Portraits of Great Military Leaders, He also has produced superb paintings of Pirates, a particular favourite of his. These superb paintings are available as Signed Limited edition prints for you to enjoy. Most images are shown on this site in the various Gallery's indicated.

Chris studied at Berkshire College of Art 1966 - 1970 and then worked for Halas and Batchelor as a background artist. In the golden age of book cover illustration Chris made the Gunslinger, Crow and Herne series his own. To this day the shelves of High Street booksellers are full of his work. Perhaps his best known popular pieces are in the now famous Jorvik Centre's paintings which form the focus of the exhibitions promotion and won a travel industry award. In recent years his best work has been paintings, such as SPQR, Anne Bonny, Mary Reid and Calico Jack Rakam and Blackbeard in Damnation Seize My Soul.

Chris's super realistic style, using oils, brilliantly reflects the techniques.. passion and depth of the old masters he has a particular love of portraiture, which his new portraits of Wellington and William of Orange certainly reflects along with others from the English Civil war his love of the subject. He is also fascinated by the awful romance of weaponry and war. Chris uses traditional Dutch paints made today, as in 1664, and is meticulous in his research and attention to detail, so scarce in our modern throw away society. Sir Anthony Van Dyke, William Dobson, Sir Peter Lely and Fortunio Matania played a vital part in Chris's formative years. He also is much influenced by Meissonier and De Neuville

The English Civil War of 1642 to 1651.

The Friction between King Charles Ist and the Parliament. became civil war in 1642, sometimes referred to as "The Great Rebellion". The Monarchy was supported by Anglican episcopacy, while the Parliament has the backing of the Presbyterians.   The Kings Forces known as the Royalist were strong in the west of England and in the North. But in 1644 after the Battle of Marston Moor a Victory for Oliver Cromwell and the parliamentarian army, (known as the New Model Army). the Royalists lost control of the North.  King Charles the Ist had to surrender after the Royalist defeat at Naseby in 1645.    The war  started again when King Charles escaped and made an alliance with the Scots who invaded  England.  But the Scots and Other Royalist forces were defeated by Oliver Cromwell.  King Charles the first was tried for treason and beheaded in 1649.

Ivan Berryman - Battle of Britain Art

Artist Ivan Berryman has been producing many pencil drawings depicting scenes from the Battle of Britain. Each of these is signed by one of the pilots who was actually present at the battle, and is often inspired by the events they took part in themselves. Special signed print editions have also been created from existing full colour print editions, with some featuring multiple pilot signatures. You can find all of Ivan's Battle of Britain artwork on his website - www.ivanberryman.com, or see a full list of pencil drawings - updated regularly, in our dedicated section of pencil drawings.

When you go to a product page for an item in our shop, click on the names of the pilots where they are linked in the text for an item to see a profile page for that pilot. Often we include photos of signing sessions along with details of their flying career, and a full list of all items signed by the pilot.

Pilot Signed Battle of Britain Prints and Original Pencil Drawings

Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain

We are busy building up a portfolio of many many original pencil drawings which depict events from the Battle of Britain, the famous air battle won by 'the Few' in the summer of 1940. The British and Commonwealth pilots defended the air above Britain and the surrounding seaways from the might of the German Luftwaffe. Greatly outnumbered, the bravery of these young pilots saved the country from invasion, and let Britain survive to go on to defeat Germany. Without that first crucial victory, the outcome of the war could have been so very different. We have been busy arranging signing sessions with the few pilots who fought in that great battle who remain with us to this day. Our newly commissioned pencil drawings are often based on the descriptions of the battle by these great men, and are authenticated by their signatures. We have also had several editions of existing prints signed in full, or have signatures added to parts of existing editions. We have also incoporated signatures of some of the German pilots who also took part in the battle, some of whom went on to become top scoring aces of the war. See our Original Pencil Drawings Section - particularly the section of artists David Pentland and Ivan Berryman. Also, see our New Signature Editions section to see all of our newly signed editions.
