Historical prints of The Charge of the 21st Lancers at the Battle of Omdurman shown in historical art prints of the Sudan Campaigns where three Victoria Crosses were won and Winston Churchill was one of the officers in the Charge. BATTLE OF OMDURMAN,  September 2nd 1898.    During his two and half year campaign to re conquor the Sydan. General Horatio Herbert, Kitchener later Lord Kitchener continued up the Nile building a railroad as he progressed. The Mahdist offered resistants as he went. Finally at the end of August 1898. Kitchener arrived at Omdurman on the left bank of the Nile opposite Khartoun, (where 13 years earlier General Gordon was killed).  It was here at Omdurman that the Khalifa had his capital.  The British force of 15,000 men attacked the superior numbers of Sudanese dervishes. a total of nearly 43,000.  The Dervishes were completely routed wiht the loss of nearly 15,000 casualties compared to the Briths and Egyptian losses of only 500.  The Khalifa escaped but only to be hunted down and  killed by Sir Francis Reginald on the November 24th 1899.  With the Main commander ot the Khalifa. Osman Digna being captured on January 19th 1900.

The Charge of the 21st Lancers at the Battle of Omdurman by Richard Caton Woodville.

Depicting the charge of the Lancers against what they first thought was a small group of Dervishes, but was in fact thousands hidden in a depression in the desert. The Lancers had to ride straight through. For this bravery three Victoria crosses were won. The 21st lancers lost 5 officers and 65 men with 120 horses lost. Winston Churchill was one of the Officers who survived the charge.
