The Battle of Aliwal was one of the major
Battles fought during the First Sikh War of 1845 to 1846, the battles were
Moodkee 1845, Forozeshah 1845, Sobraon 1846.
After the death of Ranjit Singh the Sikh King in 1845, The
Sikh army crossed the border of British India in the North west Frontier.
This was taken as an act of war and the British under the command of Sir
Hugh Gough, meet the Sikh Army at the Battle of Moodkee (18th December
1845.) and again three days later at Ferozeshah, both armies took
major casualties and the Sikh army withdrew over the frontier.
In January 1846 the Sikh army again crossed the frontier, but were routed
at the battle of Aliwal, with the last battle to place at Sobraon.
